Film Festival :Programming

Just like in the workshop said programming stands at the core of every film festival and a festival without films is not a film festival. Programming decides on the festival of the film festival.

The theme features make the festival’s content no longer vague, with clear direction and meaning, so that movie dealers can combine the characteristics of the festival and their own advantages to decide whether to participate. For example, the Venice Film Festival is the world’s first international film festival, with emphasis on art and avant-garde films. The purpose of the Venice Film Festival is “the film’s slightly serious art service”, and different slogans are presented every year. It focuses on film experimenters from all over the world and encourages them to make films with novel forms and unique techniques. Even if there are flaws, they can be accepted by the film festival if they are innovative, and become the cradle of many world movie masters.

The Cannes Film Festival has the largest market in Europe, with a focus on the combination of business and art. The Berlin Film Festival is most concerned with politics. And social, the theme of each other between the major film festivals is very obvious.

It is not difficult to think of the Cold War environment at the time when the Berlin Film Festival was founded and its location. As a product of the Cold War era, the proportion of political factors and ideological factors at the beginning of the Berlin Film Festival was relatively large. Today, the Berlin Film Festival is gradually weakening its political attributes and letting art return. But now, in the three major international film festivals in Europe, Berlin is also a relatively weak film festival.

Location is also an important factor in the film festival’s stimulating and circuit, especially for the audience, businesses, and the media. Generally speaking, the location of the film festival will be chosen in tourist destinations or cities with commercial value. The local economic development determines the influence of the film festival, and the influential film festival will drive the regional economic income. In 1932, the first international film festival was held in Venice, which made Venice a small tourist city in Europe become to one of the most famous holiday centers in the world. For decades, the film festival has kept Venice on the public level, and the unique scenery of the “water city” has made the characteristics of the Venice Film Festival more obvious. This win-win result is reflected in many film festivals.  The cultural attributes of the city itself and the inclusiveness of culture are also the main reasons why a film festival can maintain its vitality. If a film festival is located in a city with a small market and a relatively single culture, the film merchants will not come here. Opportunities for cooperation with other institutions. The Venice Film Festival itself is part of the Venice Biennale. Because of this blood relationship, the artistic attributes of Venice are more prominent in the three major European film festivals.

The Secret behind a Successful Operation of the Film Festival

The festival is not just a pure star carnival party, it is also a platform for exchanges and cooperation in countless movie business projects. For the filmmakers of a movie, the film festival is an excellent publicity platform. At the festival, public relations companies responsible for different films managed to gain more exposure for the film and even interfered with the operating mechanism and results of the festival. Therefore, how to successfully operate a large commercial activity with many exchange resources and forms of communication, how to promote the effective operation of the film festival has become a matter that the festival organizers need to worry about.

In his chapter ‘Bound and Gagged(Fischer,2009): Social connectivity and Film Festivals’ Alex Fischer relates a story of a festival director balancing and negotiating several relationships – with the festival board, volunteers, contributing artists, funding bodies, sponsors and so on. Some basic elements of the operating film festivals are described below, which cover the setting process of the film festival. Almost all the organization and construction work related to the film festival is carried out around these items.

For example, The Human Rights Arts & Film Festival (HRAFF) is a not-for-profit, apolitical organization that explores diverse and inspiring human stories through the mediums of film, art, music, and forums in Melbourne. This film festival has several co-organizers like  Lloyds Auctioneers & Valuers, and to the artists who donated their work to the art auction. With their support, the film festival raised over $14,000 for this year festival. And some patrons below:

Sponsors are organizations, institutions, or individuals that contribute to the film festival by providing money or in-kind contributions for charitable or commercial reasons. Accepting sponsorship and allowing large companies to become partners can prove the prestige and influence of the festival to a certain extent. Therefore, the organizer can choose to make some partnerships open to enhance the enthusiasm of the participants. Co-sponsors can be divided into three groups by type: organizer and organization group, customers and guests, the board of directors and sponsors. Every group plays a different role and is indispensable for the film festival.

Organizers: Organizers are members of the film festival’s organizers, such as master planners, event managers, choreographers, etc. These organizers often use their personal connections to introduce more overseas films. Clients and Guest Institutions: Sponsoring clients is often a frequent visitor to the festival, and guests will vary depending on the event. As customers and guests attending the film festival, their status is the evaluation standard of activity grade and taste. Whether it is the organizers of the festival, the exhibitors, or the various practitioners related to the film festival, or just the pure audience, they are participating in one large movie event in their own way. Every institution and every individual is an indispensable factor in the film festival. They are all co-constructing and witnessing countless movie-related spark collisions. Therefore, the successful operation of a film festival is closely related to each participant. Only through mutual cooperation and harmonious coexistence can the platform be used to its fullest effect.

How Melbourne International Film festival become a tastemaker

Actually, one person’s life is monotonous because there must be limitations and regrets in limited time and experience. The improvement of taste is not something that can be successfully improved in a short period of time. It may take a lot of effects of reading books and experiencing a lot of things. However, the film festival provides an opportunity for people to enjoy some best spiritual artworks around the world in 10 days. In that process, these rich and diverse cultures can even change a person’s cognition. In the most straightforward way, the directors unified all kinds of things and styles about history, war, life history, human pursuit, and spirit in their own film work. It is presented in a lively picture, and it brings the value to the audience same complete as a masterpiece. People can realize that they are truly knowing the world they live in, thus improving their aesthetic and taste.

The film festival can help people beyond to the surroundings and always stand in the life as an independent personality. The audience’s perspective will be more distant and broad, which can enrich one’s experience. And the ideas and concepts can be multi-faced, the spiritual enlightenment of the creative can be harvested from different angles.

As a tastemaker, a film festival is part of the integrated structure, which helps to maintain the belief in the independent value of the art film, thus achieving the continuous production and reproduction of the art game “game”. I saw the main actor and filmmaker on the stage, listening to their feeling and comments and some story behind shooting the film. At that times I start to know the film festival not only the gathering of films but the blending of some independent and free souls, which inspire the audience a lot. Maybe someone recognizes some social phenomenon, but they will not face them so real and direct.

A good movie condenses the essence of too many people’s minds. Through the experience of scenes, stories, dialogues, etc. in the movie, we will certainly have some influence, just like reading a book, so we have found another a confidence, like a portrayal of oneself, is a kind of feeling that is hard to tell. The so-called poetry book, in the modern society with reduced reading, through film and television to enhance personal temperament and taste, in order to replace a part of reading, I think, it should be a trend.

Art is inspired by life but beyond it, that may be the film festival is a tastemaker means.

Melbourne International Film Festival feature: Capital

Last week I went to the Melbourne international film festival seeing a gorgeous film “undermined: Tales from The Kimberley”.

The film is incredible and reminds me of one of the theories in the film festival study: capital, which elaborates the process of showing the film festival’s value. The events included the main actor’s interview who comes from Kimberley, Q &A sessions, filmmaker appearance and film display.

The film is taking some ordinary stories happened to people who live in Kimberley, where is located in north-western Australia. The Kimberley was one of the earliest settled parts of Australia, with a population of less than 40,000, the earliest arrivals landing about 41,000 years ago. The story is so moving and illuminating, which may illustrate four different types of capital.

Economic capital:

Film festival may attract more attention from the public and in some way, attention means economic. Attention is a resource to catch people’s time, money and feedback to the film and film festival.

For example, there is few people know the history and situation of Kimberly, where people are struggling to survive and protecting their homeland. After some events in the film festival and movie screening, the audience will discuss, reflect and engage, calling for more people to pay attention to the problem. For Kimberly, they can attract more tourism to develop travel industry. For a talented director and actors who with good acting skills will also have more exposure opportunities.

Social capital:

If I don’t go to the film festival, as an international student, maybe I never know there is such a place named Kimberly in Australia, there is such a group people are fighting for their homeland and so many moving stories. It shows the social capital for the film festival, providing a really awesome opportunity to open a new world in Kimberly which is precious.

The most important purpose of the commercial film is making profits. So They will focus on catering to the taste of the audience. However, the situation of art films is difficult, for example, they have to face the lack of investors and the docking window, lack of funds, lack of art theaters, the audience’s partial eclipse, and the rising cost of the public. It is impossible to change the status quo overnight, but the existence of the film festival can provide a good introduction, announcement and even survival platform for art films.

Cultural capital:

Undermined: Tales from The Kimberley’s director hope Melbourne have a strong sense of culture and identity, people should respect every state and nation’s cultural and customs. Film Festival has the ability to provide chances for the audience to communicate and share vinous ideas and values, not teaching but telling stories.

Symbolic capital:

The film festival is one of the most popular and easy ways to educate the public and it becomes a brand showing films which have high quality and rich connotation. There are not a single, entertaining and consumer movies, but a diverse and rich.

Melbourne International Film festival can develop a target for the city improving the power of influence all over the world.
