The Outstanding Films in MIFF

The Melbourne International Film Festival is not only Melbourne’s important cultural event but also one of Australia’s most important film festivals. It is one of the earliest film festivals in the world. During the time of the Melbourne Film Festival, we have the opportunity to appreciate many excellent films. This is an important cultural event that has a significant influence on our lives.
At the Melbourne Film Festival, we can see a lot of great movies. Among them, there are three films that impressed me. Call Me By Your Name, based on the same name novel, shows the Italian town of Riviera, which looks like a detached reality. Along with pure music and pictures, a 17-year-old Elio fell in love with American college students who were six years older than him. They were deeply fascinated by each other, but they could not help to hesitate and test. A six-week first love, ending with a faint sadness, left Elio with an unforgettable memory. In this sweltering midsummer night, they looked for each other and perhaps it is the most complete and thorough intimacy that they could never find in their life. Every frame of the movie is very pure and moving, but with a touch of sadness, it is worth everyone to experience in the theater.
There is also a movie that is impressive. The Killing of a Sacred Deer, it is a bloody case caused by a doctor-patient dispute. This is a dramatic revenge story, the first half of the paving is cold and classical, however, the second half is full of quirky and bloody atmosphere. The hero is a cardiologist. His family life is boring and dull. He lacks warmth and everyone never exchanges emotions. But he was actually a person who did not take responsibility. After the medical accident, he refused to face it until the accident of his son appeared in front of him. His ideal life slowly disappeared with the appearance of the boy. The movie was full of religious metaphors and plots, the soundtrack is extremely dramatic. The film’s screenwriter won the best screenplay of the 70th Cannes Film Festival with this film, and the film was also nominated for the Palme d’Or.
At the Melbourne Film Festival, you can also see some excellent Chinese movies. For example, Have a Nice Day. In the small town of the south, a heavy rain is coming. In order to save the feelings of his girlfriend, Zhang, a construction site driver, started a robbery campaign, which triggered a series of incidents. With Chinese-style symbols, chronological scenes, slogans, and familiar background music, director Liu Jian impressed with his unique humor. This is the first Chinese animated film to be shortlisted in Berlin’s main competition. It was shown on the last day of the Berlin Film Festival competition, with an exit rate of 0. The film ended in the audience’s laughter and applause. The authoritative independent film site Indie Wire (Independent Express) also listed this film as the first of the eight new films to be expected in the Berlin Film Festival.
We can not only see these outstanding films at the Melbourne Film Festival, but also seriously feel the stories behind the creation of these works, and have a deeper understanding of art and culture.

The Significance of Film Festival ——Cannes Film Festival as an Example

The film festival was born in 1932. It is an activity to promote the development of film art and improve the artistic level of the film. At the same time, it is also to reward valuable and creative films, promote exchanges and cooperation between filmmakers, and provide convenience for the development of film trade. In film festivals, various awards are usually established and rewards should be given to those who have achieved. In recent years, the film festival has received more and more people’s attention. The big film festival affects even the whole world. The most famous three international film festivals in Europe include the Venice Film Festival, the Cannes Film Festival, and the Berlin Film Festival.
The existence of the festival has an important meaning. Participating in the festival is also an important part of people’s cultural life. For investors, attending a film festival means to find good projects to invest. For actors and directors, the festival could increase exposure, expand its popularity, and get more opportunities to work. For the general audience, participating in the film festival can enjoy more outstanding works, have a deeper understanding of art, and also enrich their lives. Many large film festivals, such as the Cannes Film Festival, have more projects, more opportunities, and a wider audience.
The Cannes International Film Festival founded in 1946, is the most influential and top international film festival in the world. It is held every year in mid-May for a period of about 12 days. It usually opens on Wednesday and closes on Sundays every other week. Since its inception, the Cannes Film Festival has been dedicated to promoting the development of the film festival, revitalizing the world film industry and providing a stage for the world. In addition to adhering to the original intention of the festival, the festival is also ready to receive new conceptual ideas. In the past few decades, the film festival has been progressing on the basis of retaining its core values. They are committed to discovering talented people in the film industry and creating a platform for communication and creation for the film festival.
The importance of the Cannes Film Festival is obvious, as 70% of the world’s high-quality films can be seen in the festival because, in two weeks, the film has attracted the attention of the world. The Cannes Film Festival provides a springboard for art films to enter the market, as the market tends to accept Hollywood blockbusters, which will inspire the attention of film distributors, allowing viewers to see some non-commercial films. The Cannes Film Festival provides a platform for independent directors to develop. Jean Pierre, one of the Belgian directors who won the Golden Palm Award for two Dardennes, told the Liberation Daily an incredible story. In 2005, their film “Children” won the Palme d’Or. He gave the gold medal to Florence Aubenas, a former liberation reporter who was missing in Iraq. After his release, Obernaus told him that the Iraqi who guarded her told her that the film festival was held that day. They all talked about her. Jean Pierre said that even in smoke-filled Iraq, people watched the Cannes Film Festival on TV.

The Shanghai International Film Festival——Sending a Cultural Card to the World

The Shanghai International Film Festival was held in October 1993 and is held every two years. The purpose of the festival is to promote mutual understanding and friendship between the film industry in various countries and regions, and to promote the prosperity of the world’s film art. It has become an important cultural scene in Shanghai. The Shanghai International Film Festival has attracted more than 1.5 million Chinese viewers, attracting nearly 10,000 Chinese and foreign filmmakers to visit Shanghai.

The 21st Shanghai International Film Festival officially ended on June 25. The Shanghai International Film Festival has established a film exchange platform and has taken an advanced road to enhance the international professional power. As the only international A-class film festival in China, one of the larger and more influential film festivals in the Asia-Pacific region, the Shanghai International Film Festival has become a “golden business card” for “Shanghai Culture” to the world. The “Four Brands” of “Made in Shanghai”, “Shanghai Service”, “Shanghai Shopping” and “Shanghai Culture” are also vividly energized by the platform of the film festival. “What many festivals actually now market and project are not just ‘narrative images, ‘ but a city ‘s own ‘festival image, ‘ its own self-perceptions of the place it occupies within the global space economy, especially in relation to other cities and other festivals.” (Stringer, 2000)

In the nomination of the Shanghai International Film Festival Golden Jubilee Award, the Chinese film “Ala Ginger” won two awards from the jury and the best screenwriter. In addition, “Ala Ginger” is the only Chinese film awarded by the Golden Jubilee Award. It is reported that “AlaGinger” is a Tibetan transliteration, it is a Tibetan folk song with the meaning of “please drink this wine.” The film tells a story that Omar conceals her condition and does not listen to her husband’s dissuasion to go to Lhasa. When her body was getting worse and worse, until one day she finally said her secret that had been dusty for a long time.

The film, born in 1895, is now entering a new stage of development. The flourishing development of the film industry and the eagerness of the film art have made the film be particularly eye-catching in the context of global communication. The industrial and cultural attributes of the film are being deeply explored and interpreted on a more diversified platform. Chinese films are taking an increasingly important position in the global film development landscape. Since the beginning of a new stage of industrial development in 2003, the symbol of Chinese cinema has changed with each passing day. At present, China has become the world’s second-largest film market, ranking first in the world in terms of the number of movie screens. At the same time, Chinese films, like films in other countries, are facing unprecedented challenges and opportunities. The festival is a grand event for the industry and a festival for fans. The film festival itself is a large platform for the service of industry and audience. Through the Shanghai International Film Festival, we could learn about film creation trends and industry information from all over the country and around the world.21

The Experience of Visiting Melbourne International Film Festival

The Melbourne International Film Festival is Australia’s first international film festival. It was founded in 1952. It has a long history and has a certain influence in the international arena. It is held in Melbourne every year for two weeks. The main purpose of the International Film Festival is understanding the film situation in countries around the world, promoting the close cooperation between Australian filmmakers and foreign filmmakers, and contributing to the development of Australia’s film industry. At the same time, the Melbourne Film Festival has also brought some economic benefits to Australia. Its main activities include the screening of feature films, exhibitions, short film awards, presentations, as well as awards. I attended the Melbourne International Film Festival and felt the Australian film culture. I also had a deeper understanding of the film festival. This experience of visiting Melbourne International Film Festival made me have a deeper understanding of many related theories and concepts.miff

When we are talking about film festivals, it tends to think more about red carpets, stars, and trophies. In fact, the International Film Festival shows us more of some excellent works that touch the hearts of people. The movie we watched was “Undermined: Tales from Kimberley.” Before the documentary screening, a famous musician from Kimberley brought a stunning musical performance with lyrics and content showing Kimberley’s culture and local lifestyle. The director also gave a detailed introduction to the concept of the film and related cultural backgrounds. It also tells about some of the problems they encountered in the process of creation, which enabled us to have a deeper understanding. This documentary describes the conflict between Kimberley’s pristine natural environment and local development. It brings the audience an unpretentious and deeply rooted story with an objective perspective. The documentary makes us know more about that large-scale mining and development of pastoral areas threaten the original ecological environment. It also has an impact on people’s beliefs. What impressed me the most was that in the final interactive session, the audience was free to ask questions to the director and the staff to understand the essence of this documentary production in the most direct way. The film uses a real story to show one of the most important issues, the threats to the ecological environment in social development. This will be an important issue that human society has always had to think about and face.

This experiences of visiting the Melbourne International Film Festival gave me a deeper understanding of the film festival. We learned the gatekeeper theory in the course. The staff of the festival acted as “gatekeepers” who were able to control the acquisition of film and film culture (Stringer, 2001). During the choice of film, the staff of the film festival should also consider a number of factors, whether the film meets the requirements of the film festival. When the gatekeeper chooses which product to show to the public, they will consider many aspects, such as fields, capital, and habits.  “Undermined: Tales from Kimberley”,  to a certain extent, it is a documentary of great significance. It is dedicated to making people aware of the problems in society and responding to social conditions.
