Thoughts and Reflections About the KOFFIA

The Korean Film Festival in Australia abbreviated as KOFFIA has been running for nine years now. Many Australian citizens and other people around the world have been following keenly to understand the different genres and cultures demonstrated during the annual festivals. Many issues have been driving the viewers and listeners to continue waiting for the annual program (Boon, 2014). In the year 2018, the annual festival spans for twenty-three days and nights. The festival runs in different Australian cities such as Sydney, Brisbane, Melbourne, and Canberra. This paper focuses on my thoughts and reflections relating to the different film festivals in the KOFFIA program. Notably, I will focus on the Melbourne 2018 program that ran from 6th to 13th September this year.

Firstly, I believe that many people await these annual festivals because they showcase the Korean cultures. The viewers and listeners can understand the traditions, beliefs, and practices of the Korean people through the film. The hunger for the knowledge about other cultures influences many people due to the multicultural nature of the society. Individuals have been moving from one country to another in search of jobs, education, business opportunities, and other diplomatic activities. There is a need to understand the way the Koreans behave through their films. The 2018 annual festival in Melbourne informs the viewers about the clothing, foods, lifestyle, language, religious beliefs, and traditions of Koreans.

My second thought about the 2018 Melbourne, KOFFIA is that it is one of the best festivals in the world now. Having a single program that showcases all the genres in twenty days is not a simple idea. The annual festival covers the needs of all the music lovers because all genres can be accessed in one program. All the genre movies including the documentary and action films are available in the program. The production value of the Korean movies and other artworks is also super. The producers selected the best colors, background music, lighting, and sound throughout the movies. The viewers will not get bored easily even after watching it for twenty-three days. All the twenty-two films showcased this year in the four Australian cities were prepared by the top-notch talents. The Korean festivals are directed and prepared by the world-renowned artists. Most people are attracted by the men and women behind the cameras.

Thirdly, I think the themes and topical issues covered in the Korean films attract the viewers. One film that I believe many people love is the Little Forest. This video follows a young girl named Hye-won as she leaves the prestigious life to stay with her childhood friends. The audiences are left wondering and looking forward to living a simple life. The film directors focused on the various topical issues that attract the viewers in Australia. However, I believe that the Closing Night film should not have been included in the 2018 Melbourne program. It promotes vices such as cigarette smoking, alcohol abuse, and sexual cohabiting (Travis, 2018). I found out that people of different socio-demographic characteristics watch these movies. Children, for example, may get the wrong picture about the way they should live. I think that the government should censor and classify the movies to suit the characteristics of the different viewers. Other movies in the 2018 program such as the Taxi Driver, Forgotten, and Midnight Runners were good for the viewers.

Film festival is not only about films now…thoughts about MIFF

MIFF, which stands for the Melbourne International Film Festival, is an annual event that is held in the city of Melbourne. This town is recognized as one of the most significant ones in the history of the film industry. Also, MIFF was established in 1952 and is one of the most iconic occurrences in Melbourne. It takes place in various theatres in the towns’ central business district and presents films from both international and local filmmakers. For three weeks every year, filmmakers and audiences are treated to fun fare in the Australian cinema scene. This annual event has manifested how movies are essential both to the film industry and the society at large.

MIFF continues to assert its role in putting Melbourne in the global cultural map. It has played an important role in bringing people together and uniting them through the festivities. It has created a sense of unity in the town and internationally as it brings people together as they sample this film culture. Every year, film lovers converge in the city to enjoy the entertaining, audacious and valiant programming and this keeps them yearning for more annually. This, in turn, has been of great benefit to Melbourne both socially and economically. As film enthusiasts converge every year in the city, there are a lot of interactions and cultural exchange the town grows socially. This festival also brings a lot of economic benefits to the city in the sense that all the people traveling from other parts of the world will need places to stay and this, in turn, leads to economic growth. MIFF has, therefore, manifested the success of its vision of generating both economic and social capital for both Victoria and Melbourne.

This annual event has also grown to be instrumental in the development of talents in this industry. It has established several programs that continue to help nurture young and upcoming filmmakers. The Premiere Fund is one of those programs where MIFF has initiated an ongoing fund with the aim of supporting forthcoming Australian films and documentaries. This kitty seeks to promote quality productions and give them a platform to premiere their work at the festival to gain international recognition. The fund is given to deserving films considering the genres of the productions. These projects are taken through an assessment process which examines a variety of factors, and the winner is announced. This exposes young and upcoming filmmakers to the outside world. The Accelerator Lab is another essential program under MIFF. This occurs during the MIFF weekend of the short films which includes the public viewing of the participants’ short films after which they are awarded. This program is a four-day event where these filmmakers are taken through seminars, screenings, networking, and workshops. This, therefore, means that local filmmakers get the chance of interacting with leading international and domestic practitioners. MIFF 37º South Market is another program which brings the global financing marketplace in the film industry to Melbourne. This happens in the opening days of the festival, and it brings together international distributors and a group of pre-selected local producers seeking financial support. I believe that this marketplace has attracted large companies in the film industry owing to the great talent showcased.

Finally, over the years, film enthusiasts have been treated to a thrilling experience in the name of MIFF. This event has continued to innovate and develop years of accomplishments to make sure that Melbourne continues as the cultural capital of the country and that the festival strives to be Australia’s biggest and most important film festival. Just like its slogan last year “Explore the New Worlds”.
