The Storm Looming

The movie is a Chinese crime suspense movie, which directed by Yue Dong, and starring Yihong Duan and Yiyan Jiang. I noticed this movie because of the Tokyo International Film Festival. “The Storm Looming” won two awards at the Tokyo international film festival, includes the best art contribution award and the best actor award.

This film surprised the Chinese film industry with its loss, cold and ups and downs. For a long time, this kind of texture can only be found in European and American films, Korean films and Hong Kong films more than 10 years ago.

Yihong Duan accurately captured the spirit of the hero Yu Guowei. In the first half of life, all people in a low-pressure atmosphere of the times, Yu Guowei works hard, he is eager to want an honorable identity. He wore ill-fitting leather and tie in the floppy crowd and did his best to be a decent man. He is above petty thieving in the hope of gaining the status of a public official. But at the same time, his posture is low, even sycophantic, his knees never seem to straight up, and he just like hustles to protect the fire in the rain。Yu Guowei is waiting for a chance to light a cigarette for an honorable public officer — a disenchanted wretch whose only dream is to be part of the system. At last, the dreamer was swallowed up by this dream, which was cruel and impermanent. It was the fate that countless people in the old time and space had to bear.

The story of the film began in 1997, and the year of the story ends is 2008. Early 2008, a rare snow and ice disaster struck southern China. In fact, no matter 1997 or 2008, what has been deposited in the Chinese memory are great events, but in those great events, there were how many Yu Guowei, no one knows.

“The storm Looming is a structure film, it seems to be talking about murder suspects, in fact, it is about the dream of The Times. The movie’s heavy rain from beginning to end represents that era, implying that the hero can’t get out of the small city in the haze, and can’t see the real world outside the factory. In the film, there is death, several murders, a domestic violence, and self-destruction of a woman. They are all tiny destinies under the age. Some people vent, some despair, and in the sense of suffocation, people turn the struggle into harm. These deaths are not only the deaths of individuals in the physical sense, but they are also more like the funeral for a time lost in the past.

The International Chinese Film Festival (ICFF)

The international Chinese film festival is a Chinese film festival that registered in Australia and recognized by the government of Sydney. Therefore, the international Chinese film festival is also known as the Australian international Chinese film festival. “The Australian international Chinese film festival is a global Chinese film festival organized by the non-profit organization – the international Chinese film festival organizing committee, one session per year.” (ICFF, 2014)

The aim of the International Chinese film festival is to promote Chinese films to the worldwide, enhance the influence and recognition of Chinese films in the world, and enhance the communication and cooperation between Chinese film makers and international film makers. The films that display in International Chinese film festival not just confined to the Chinese national and regional. Every year, the film festival organizing committee will choose films from all over the world (mainly in mainland China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, and other regions) to introduce and show. Those films are the newest and the best films of that year. At the same time, the organizing committee will invite some famous filmmakers and celebrities to attend the festival. The International Chinse Film Festival not only attracted a large number of Chinese people’s attention but also attracted the attention and support of many local Australian audiences. Although very young, the international Chinese film festival plays an important role in promoting Chinese films and helping Chinese filmmakers go international.

As an important part of the film industry, Chinese films play an important role in promoting and publicizing Chinese culture overseas. However, we all know that in recent years, most of the Chinese films that have won international awards showed ancient and backward Chinese customs and practices, and there are few Chinese films that can enter the international mainstream. The international Chinese film festival helps China better shape its national image by showing more Chinese films abroad so that more people can see and understand the real Chinese customs and practices. It can be said that the international Chinese film festival has effectively promoted Chinese films to the world and enabled Chinese film makers to learn advanced film technologies and shooting techniques from other countries. Similarly, the international Chinese film festival has given Chinese culture lovers around the world a better understanding of Chinese culture and Chinese films. Of course, it is worth mentioning that the international film festival promotes the cultural exchanges between China and Australia. The international film festival has become one of the most important Chinese cultural projects in Australia, which has promoted the communication and promotion of Chinese culture in Australia.

Why people need the film festival?

The film we chose to see on our last MIFF trip was Undermined: TALES FROM THE KIMBERLEY. For me, the genre of this movie is a very strange one. I seldom watch this kind of movie, and I find that there are few movies showing this kind in the cinema. I am grateful for Irina’s choice to give me the opportunity to learn about different types of movies. The incident tells the story of Kimberley in northern Australia. If I did not go to MIFF, I think I might never have known there was such a place in the world, and what happened to it. From this, I found some functions of the film festival.

In my opinion, the most important significance of the festival is to provide a platform. This platform is fair and open, it is hoping to show the elegant demeanor of different film works and discovering and tap potential people and things. It also confirms visible results (set a model of consensus), and learning industry topics and so on, so as to push the whole industry to make a summary and make progress in a positive direction.

First of all, I think one of the charms of the festival is that we can learn about different types of films from different cultures. It’s a cultural exchange. Secondly, the film festival also provides a stage for small films to show and makes it gain more audiences and attention from all over the world. For independent filmmakers and niche art films, it is difficult for them to get exposure or even release in their home countries without strong financial support for publicity, or with the presence of well-known movie stars to attract attention. Attending the festival gives many independent filmmakers and art films a stage to show and gain exposure to attract attention. Undermined: TALES FROM THE KIMBERLEY is an example. Because of MIFF, people know the film and discuss it. Furthermore, the awards and honors set by the festival also give filmmakers and art films more opportunities to let film distributors see them, thus boosting the film’s release rate.

As I mentioned in my last blog post, the film festival gives people a chance to meet face-to-face with others to discuss and communicate films, especially for film lovers. In fact, the film festival provides a good platform for filmmakers to communicate and learn, so as to get the latest information and improve their own strength. Also, because the film festival attracts a lot of investors, filmmakers can meet with film investors from all over the world in a short time to promote their films. Film festival provides the things that filmmakers want, and it also needs filmmakers to provide things meaningful.

The first film festival tour—— MIFF

In the past, I had no idea about a film festival, and I thought it was far away from my life. As in my understanding, a film festival gives me the image of celebrities, movie stars, red carpet, award ceremony and so on. I thought those things would not appear in my life. However, through attended Melbourne International Film Festival (MIFF) with Irina, my understanding of a film festival has changed. Now I know that a film festival is a big event that all the people can participate in. In other words, everyone can attend a film festival, and people can choose different films that they interested in to watch.

Different from the usual movie shows in cinemas, before watching a film during the period of a film festival, there will be some important guest speeches, such as the directors and the leading actors. Those people will simply introduce the film to audiences. After their speeches, the film hall will start to play the screening of the film. To my surprise, after the film is over, the host will invite the main creators of the film, such as the director and the scriptwriter to the stage for interviews. Through interviews, the audience can better understand the meaning of the film and the story behind the film, and even try to know about directors and writers ‘experiences. The interview after the film brings us closer to the film.

My favorite part is the audience’s question time after the interview. In this session, the film creators’ team will interact with the audience and answer questions raised by the audience. This is a very precious opportunity for our audience to solve some of our doubts about this film, and it also gives the film creators’ team and audience a chance to communicate. Although I did not have the chance to come up with a question to the film creators’ team, I still feel excited.

After the interactive session, the film festival trip is not really finished. Because Irina gave me a new understanding of the festival again. Irina led us to the Lounge of the MIFF. Food and drink can be ordered in the Lounge, where people can comfortably continue to communicate their feelings and thoughts about the film. The lounge likes a small post-film exchange, it is giving people a chance to discuss the film face-to-face, and it makes people close to others. Digitalization makes us accustomed to watching movies on the Internet and communicating with others through film reviews. Although it is convenient for people’s life, it makes people distanced others. The film festival brings us closer to the film and it also brings us closer to discuss the film.
