Reflection of the Beijing International Film Festival

Internationally renowned film festivals and exhibitions are a major event in the global film and television industry. The elites are gathered, the stars are gathered, and their respective film festivals are distinctive, such as the business style of the Oscar Film Festival, the art genre of the Cannes Film Festival, and the all-encompassing Toronto Film Festival, the new atmosphere of the Tokyo Film Festival and so on. Each film festival has its own concept. In the context of the era of globalization, international film festivals play a role in absorbing pluralism and exchange transactions, and constructing a bridge to interact with world film art ideas, creative ideas and resources.

Since its birth in April 2011, the Beijing International Film Festival has been a successful eight-year journey. Beijing International Film Festival is held every April (Wikipedia, 2018). China intends to make the Beijing Film Festival as the first-class film festival in Asia, which is the same as the Cannes Film Festival in Europe and the Toronto Film Festival in the United States.

The Beijing International Film Festival has built a platform to showcase the Chinese era. The Chinese elements contain traditional cultural charm. The core value concept of the Tiantan Award “Beauty in Variety, Harmony in Diversity” is the soul of the Beijing Film Festival (Beijing International Film Festival, 2018). The design of the Temple of Heaven trophy can be described as unique: the sleeve dance that prevailed in the Han Dynasty and the “Tiantan”, the place where the royal blessing of the Qing Dynasty was merged. Its shape resembled a graceful woman’s dancing sleeves. In addition to the trophy design, traditional cultural elements such as Chinese martial arts, Beijing opera, calligraphy, and folk art are everywhere in the major festivals.

Movies are the most widely popular art form in the world. Using movies as a way to expand cultural exchanges and cooperation between countries, it is easier to abandon prejudice, eliminate wariness and build trust. Each of the Beijing Film Festivals has arranged special exhibitions of many countries and regions, showing the customs and cultural characteristics of various nationalities and nations. The organizing committee carefully organized the Tiantan Awards, actively expanded the channels of invitations, and extensively collected new works of outstanding films from all over the world. Regardless of the size of the country, regardless of geographical ethnicity, it was completely measured according to the value standards of “Beauty in Variety, Harmony in Diversity”.

Apart from that, Beijing Film Festival has built a platform for the spread of world film brands. In the film industry, art and business have always been inseparable. The Beijing Film Festival builds a film trading market and establishes a continuous comprehensive service platform to provide opportunities for buyers, sellers, investors, and producers from all over the world to speed up the flow of film information and effectively save transaction costs. Film festivals offer gratification to their participants, which should be understood as the benefit that comes from interaction (Fischer, 2013). More and more film producers, producers, propaganda parties, and film-related institutions and projects have chosen to promote and cooperate at the Beijing Film Festival.

For me personally, after studying the relevant materials of the Beijing International Film Festival, one of the biggest inspirations while curating a film festival is the need to establish a standard for awards. Just like the “Beauty in Variety, Harmony in Diversity” standard in Beijing International Film Festival. Only by setting this standard can we give the film a fair award, and this standard can fit the theme and concept of our film festival at the same time.
