Looking back at history, thinking about the present – is the Venice International Film Festival growing all the way?

Founded in 1932, Mostra Internazionale d’Arte Cinematografica di Venezia (the Venice International Film Festival) is the world’s oldest international film festival, known as the “mother of the International Film Festival”. It is held in Lido Island, Venice, Italy from August to September each year. The highest award is the Golden Lion Award. The Venice International Film Festival and the Cannes International Film Festival in France and the Berlin International Film Festival in Germany are also known as the three major international film festivals in Europe. Venice International Film Festival has a long history, but its development is also very hard, had not held because of world war ii, has been repealed film awards system for political reasons, so the Venice International Film Festival can hold to now is very not easy, you can imagine the Venice International Film Festival for the international movie field development has very important influence.

With the changing times and the continuous development of the film industry, the Venice International Film Festival has gradually formed its own unique tradition: it focuses on film experimenters in different countries and encourages them to shoot films with novel forms and unique techniques. Even if there are some defects, as long as there is innovation, it can be accepted by the festival. Therefore, the film festival’s aim is “film is a serious art service”, each year put forward different slogans, and the criteria for judging is pure: artistic. In the 1960s and 1970s, the Venice Film Festival unearthed a large number of emerging European filmmakers. Although the film chosen by it is not necessarily the best work of the director, it is always leading the development trend of European art films.

75th Venice International Film Festival

The 75th Venice International Film was held in Venice, Italy from August 29th to September 8th, 2018. A total of 21 films competed for the Golden Lion Award. In the end, the film “Rome” directed by Mexican director Alfonso Caron won the Golden Lion Award for Best Film. However, as the market regulation of film trading becomes more and more obvious, the development of the Cannes International Film Festival has opened a gap with the development of the Venice International Film Festival, and the Toronto Film Festival is also growing, so the Venice International Film Festival faces considerable pressure. The films selected this time are more or less controversial because of the story. Hollywood stars on the red carpet have become the biggest highlights, and even many of the selected films are Hollywood regulars. The purpose of the Venice International Film Festival itself is that it is highly supported by people and that many film festivals should be studied. I hope that the Venice International Film Festival will adhere to its own purpose and reward outstanding directors and actors for artistic creation. Creative and artistic works are what filmmakers really should pursue. The role of the festival is not only to discover more talented young filmmakers, but more importantly, to be able to truly develop the film industry, develop and innovate more filmmaking techniques, and make the film industry develop better.
