The film we chose to see on our last MIFF trip was Undermined: TALES FROM THE KIMBERLEY. For me, the genre of this movie is a very strange one. I seldom watch this kind of movie, and I find that there are few movies showing this kind in the cinema. I am grateful for Irina’s choice to give me the opportunity to learn about different types of movies. The incident tells the story of Kimberley in northern Australia. If I did not go to MIFF, I think I might never have known there was such a place in the world, and what happened to it. From this, I found some functions of the film festival.
In my opinion, the most important significance of the festival is to provide a platform. This platform is fair and open, it is hoping to show the elegant demeanor of different film works and discovering and tap potential people and things. It also confirms visible results (set a model of consensus), and learning industry topics and so on, so as to push the whole industry to make a summary and make progress in a positive direction.
First of all, I think one of the charms of the festival is that we can learn about different types of films from different cultures. It’s a cultural exchange. Secondly, the film festival also provides a stage for small films to show and makes it gain more audiences and attention from all over the world. For independent filmmakers and niche art films, it is difficult for them to get exposure or even release in their home countries without strong financial support for publicity, or with the presence of well-known movie stars to attract attention. Attending the festival gives many independent filmmakers and art films a stage to show and gain exposure to attract attention. Undermined: TALES FROM THE KIMBERLEY is an example. Because of MIFF, people know the film and discuss it. Furthermore, the awards and honors set by the festival also give filmmakers and art films more opportunities to let film distributors see them, thus boosting the film’s release rate.
As I mentioned in my last blog post, the film festival gives people a chance to meet face-to-face with others to discuss and communicate films, especially for film lovers. In fact, the film festival provides a good platform for filmmakers to communicate and learn, so as to get the latest information and improve their own strength. Also, because the film festival attracts a lot of investors, filmmakers can meet with film investors from all over the world in a short time to promote their films. Film festival provides the things that filmmakers want, and it also needs filmmakers to provide things meaningful.
